'The Last Geisha' Carved Painting
Carved acrylic painting on wood, 2021.
600mm diameter round frame.
"The Last Geisha" is the last ever Geisha painting to be created by Dominique Baker.
This artwork includes subtle references to the Ethereum logo seen on her hair adornment. It is also the very first painting by Baker to be signed with her DomBaker.ETH domain name. The pose of this geisha is a hint at Baker's new direction in her art practice, she is heading into the future but with her eyes on the past. This work is significant in the evolution of Baker's art. It marks the end of an era with hints at what the future may bring.
The kahu bird you see on her kimono is influenced by the bird life seen from Baker's home studio. It is a symbol of protection. The motifs on her kimono are referenced from Baker's talented friend Cora-Allen Wickliffe and her revival of the lost art of Hiapo.
