Te Whetū o Herekoretanga - The Star of LIberty
Te Whetū o Herekoretanga – The Star of Liberty
Inspired by the enduring symbolism of the Statue of Liberty, Te Whetū o Herekoretanga reimagines freedom through the lens of Aotearoa. At the heart of the work stands Papatūānuku, the Māori Earth Mother, embodying resilience, identity, and the interconnected relationship between people, land, and the natural world.
Rather than holding the traditional tablet of law, she carries a collection of Aotearoa's native birds—living symbols of knowledge, guardianship, and whakapapa. Flowing emerald robes are adorned with celestial forms, while carved kōwhaiwhai-inspired patterns and rich copper tones reference both Māori visual language and the weathered patina of the Statue of Liberty.
This painting explores the idea that true liberty is not only political, but cultural, spiritual, and deeply rooted in our connection to one another and to the whenua. It invites viewers to reflect on identity, belonging, and the stories that shape us across generations.
